Trezor Setup Guide: Trezor.io/Start & Trezor Suite

Trezor.io/Start® – The Official Trezor Suite Setup Workflow

Welcome to the official starting point for setting up your Trezor hardware wallet (Trezor Model One or Trezor Model T). The entire process is securely guided through the companion application, **Trezor Suite**. By following these steps, you ensure the integrity and security of your private keys.

⚠️ SECURITY FIRST: The 12/24-Word Seed (Recovery Seed)

Your Recovery Seed is the **MASTER KEY** to your crypto. **NEVER** enter it into your computer, phone, or any device besides your Trezor (for Model T restoration only). **NEVER** share it, store it digitally, or take a photo of it. Only use the physical Recovery Sheet provided in the box. Trezor will **NEVER** ask you for it.

1. Phase 1: Download and Install Trezor Suite

Trezor Suite is the modern, official desktop application used to manage your Trezor device. It provides a full dashboard for transactions, security settings, and device management.

1.1. Accessing the Official Hub

  1. Navigate Directly:
  2. Open your browser and navigate directly to the official setup page: Trezor.io/Start. This URL ensures you are downloading authentic software.

  3. Select Your Device:
  4. Choose your specific model (Model One or Model T) on the webpage. Both devices primarily use the same Trezor Suite application.

  5. Choose the Download Option:
  6. Trezor offers two main ways to use Trezor Suite:

    • **Desktop Application (Recommended):** Download the installer for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux). This provides the most integrated and stable experience.
    • **Web Version:** While available, the dedicated desktop application is generally preferred for optimal security and performance.

1.2. Installation Process

  1. Run the Installer:
  2. Locate the downloaded file and double-click to start the installation wizard. Follow the prompts to install the application.

  3. Launch Trezor Suite:
  4. Open the Trezor Suite application from your desktop shortcut or Applications folder. The app will prompt you to connect your Trezor device.

2. Phase 2: Connecting and Installing Firmware

The first time you connect your Trezor, the Suite will guide you through installing the essential firmware onto the device's secure chip.

2.1. Initial Connection

  1. Connect the Trezor:
  2. Using the official USB cable, connect your Trezor to your computer. The Trezor screen should light up with a lock icon.

  3. Trezor Suite Detection:
  4. Trezor Suite will detect the device. Since it's new, it will likely prompt you to install or update the firmware.

  5. Install Official Firmware:
  6. Click "Install Firmware" in Trezor Suite. **Verify the hash** (a unique identifier displayed on the computer and the device) matches. Press the confirmation button on the physical Trezor device to approve the installation.

  7. Wait for Completion:
  8. Do not disconnect the device or interrupt the computer during the firmware installation process. Once complete, the device will restart.

3. Phase 3: Creating Your Wallet and Recovery Seed

This is where your unique wallet is created, generating the private keys and the crucial Recovery Seed.

3.1. Creating a New Wallet

  1. Select Wallet Setup:
  2. In Trezor Suite, choose **"Create new wallet."** You will then be prompted to choose a standard backup (12 or 24 words) or Shamir Backup (advanced). **New users should choose the Standard Backup.**

  3. Generate Seed:
  4. The Trezor Suite will instruct you to look at the Trezor device screen. The device will display the 12 or 24 words of your **Recovery Seed** one by one. **Write these down immediately.**

  5. The Physical Backup (Recovery Sheet):
  6. Carefully write the words in the correct order on the paper Recovery Sheet provided. Double-check your spelling and order. Once done, keep this sheet in a safe, secluded physical location (e.g., a bank safe or fireproof box).

  7. Seed Confirmation (Model T Only):
  8. For the Model T (which has a touchscreen), you will be asked to confirm several words by typing them back onto the device screen using the random keypad layout. **(Model One does not require confirmation at this stage for security reasons, so you must manually verify your handwriting.)**

3.2. Setting the PIN

  1. Choose PIN:
  2. Trezor Suite will prompt you to set a PIN. The PIN entry is unique: a random 3x3 grid of numbers will appear on the **Trezor device screen**. This grid represents the key positions.

  3. Enter on Computer:
  4. You enter the PIN on the **computer screen**, clicking the positions that correspond to the numbers on the Trezor device screen. This technique (mixing the displayed pattern on the Trezor with the entered grid on the computer) prevents keyloggers from capturing your PIN.

  5. Confirm PIN:
  6. Repeat the process to confirm your PIN. Your PIN is now set and is required every time you connect the device.

3.3. Naming Your Device

You will be prompted to give your Trezor a unique name (e.g., MyTrezorBTC). This name will be displayed in Trezor Suite and on the device screen for easy identification.

4. Phase 4: Using Trezor Suite and Transacting

With your device initialized, you can now use Trezor Suite to manage your portfolio.

4.1. The Trezor Suite Dashboard

  • Accounts: View your balances for supported cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, etc.).
  • Send/Receive: Initiate transactions. **When receiving, Trezor Suite will force you to verify the receiving address on the Trezor device screen to prevent address substitution attacks.**
  • Exchange: Use integrated services (e.g., Invity) to buy, sell, or swap crypto directly within the Suite interface.
  • Trezor Password Manager: Use your Trezor as a second factor for logging into websites.
  • Firmware Check: The Suite will automatically notify you when new firmware is available for installation in the settings menu.

4.2. Advanced Security: Passphrase (25th Word)

Trezor Suite allows you to enable the optional **Passphrase** feature. This is an additional word or phrase that you choose and remember (it is not part of the 12/24 words). This feature creates a hidden, entirely separate wallet. If someone gains access to your 12/24 seed, they still cannot access your funds without this extra word.

  • **Recommendation:** Advanced users should consider enabling a Passphrase after becoming comfortable with the basic setup.
  • **Warning:** If you forget your Passphrase, your funds are permanently lost, even with the Recovery Seed.
